Anne Boleyn was Queen of England from 1533 to 1536, the second wife of Henry VIII. Anne was one of a series of mistresses that Henry had once he lost interest in Catherine of Aragon who was unable to bear him a son. They married in secret in 1533 four months before the divorce was finalised. Anne also failed to bear Henry a son and Henry turned against her, accusing her of adultery. Sadly she was executed in May 1536. The gown and headdress are faithful representations of Tudor dress and feature the French hood with its elegant black veil which was thought to be introduced to England by Anne who was raised in France. The detail in the gown is very strong and features a heavily sculpted petticoat echoing the silk brocades used in costume of the Tudor period.
