General Information

Caring for your china, crystal and cutlery

Careful treatment can prolong the life of fine china, crystal and cutlery almost indefinitely. Here are some suggestions:

Washing up
When washing up use water at a temperature bearable by hand and wash up as soon as possible. Certain foods can hurt china decorations and blacken silver, so if there has to be a delay leave china soaking in clear water without a detergent and rinse cutlery under the hot tap (but do not leave it wet overnight).

Do not rush washing up
Haste breaks china and crystal. Wash one piece of crystal at a time. Remember that the rim is the weakest part of the glass, so do not stand glasses upside down. Do not hold a glass by the stem when washing or drying the bowl.

Dishwashers
Repeated washings in very hot water and detergents can destroy the surface of crystal and damage china decorations, so dishwashers are not really recommended for fine tableware. Some machines use a particularly damaging combination of a high temperature and a corrosive washing agent. Temperatures should never exceed 60 centigrade and some leading china manufacturers suggest that only powders by Freedom, Relavit, Extra and Waitrose be used. Cutlery should always be dried by hand soon after washing. If left to dry in a closed environment it can become spotted and knife blades can become pitted.

Warming china
China may be warmed but should not be exposed to direct heat.

Avoid scratching china
Do not slide plates together. If you stack them use paper or cloth separators. Mulberry Hall's very smart interleaves can be purchased. Plate racks and cup hooks are also good ideas.

Microwave cookers
Do not use in a microwave cooker a piece of china containing gold or platinum in its decoration.

Stains
Remove tea and coffee stains from china with borax on a soft cloth. Steradent tablets will remove light stains from crystal and vinegar will remove lime deposits. The interior of inaccessible china, decanters and vases should be cleaned by gently pouring in coarse sand or rice with warm soapy water and swirling the mixture round.

Polishing cutlery
There are many excellent products on the market to choose from. Just be sure to use a product made specifically for the task.

Storing cutlery
Loose storage allows scratching. The best methods of storage are in a canteen or in the special silversmith's storage wallets available from Mulberry Hall. These are compact and protect against tarnish.

Packing
When moving house leave the packing to the experts.
